My Mom made a lot of my costumes for a few years. The best ones were:
* black dice (I wore a painted box and some tights, but it was very cute)
* angels (always easy! all you need is a white dress and a fabric set of wings on coat-wire, with some glitter)
* a princess (even easier: the dress doesn't have to be white, and you only need to glue a matching silky scarf into the tip of a cone hat)
* cat (black leotard, black shoes, black ears and a tail; eyeliner)
* Dorothy (sprinkle red glitter onto a cheap pair of wal-mart flats, throw on a blue-checked dress and "ta-daa!"), NTM the entire cast of the Wizard of Oz -- you could toss together a grey sweat number for the tin-man body, and if you did, the rest of the costumes would probably also be things you already have at home.
Depending upon their ages, you could even dress one up like Dora or any other popular cartoon kid, with only a few pieces of clothing, and maybe a hat.

i think you are right in some ways and she is right in some ways. you said halloween costumes are expensive and stuff, and beer can be too, considering you had 14. and your kids cant force the beer down your throat. your kid accidentally grabs it and you take it away, thats not forcing it down your throat. you should of gone to church, but no, you started drinking so i also agree with your daughter, thats a bad impression on your kids to drink that much. but i agree with you on the halloween costumes, if the kids had fun, it doesnt really matter. it seems that the halloween costumes are just part of the problem. i think shes also mad you drink, that you tore sheets up, you didnt go to church, and yea. so i agree on both points.

My son still remembers the space man costume I made for him out of a Clorox bleach gallon jug. Cut out the face, spray painted it silver, and voila, 'Na-nu, Na-nu' was born. He was 5. Now he is 40, and still talks about it. It was the bomb!
Then, you can get in the rag bag for old pants and plaid shirt, and a hat, stick straw in the sleeves, ankles, neck, around for hair, and you have the scare-crow. Actually, we stuffed him and put him on the front porch.
Old sheets make wonderful ghosts and goblins. Have fun!

If you have any old dresses a good one for a girl is to pin it up for her and let her pretend shes a princess for the night. Or for a boy, if you have like some old dark fabric, black prefered, you can make a cape out of it and let him pretend to be count dracula. Also, If you have like some old beige pants and a horizontailly striped shirt, pair those with a bandana on his head he can be a pirate. The skys the limit! just look around and youll be surpirsed what you can whip up.

Here are some costumes my mother made for my siblings and me when we were children: unicorn, Ninja Turtles, Cat-Woman, Elvis, Power Ranger, Cleopatra, Zorro, skeleton, Casper, dinosaurs...
I'd recommend patterns from Simplicity; they're usually very good!

I took a round pc of wood and cut a hole in the center of it.. then proceeded to set the table.(glueing everything down /found supplies at garage sales) I purchased a plastic turkey plate and drilled a hole in that.. climbed under and then had someone put the turkey pan cover on..when they lifted it..to give candy out.. your head there with your eyes closed.

Do hobo's ..... old clothes from the salvation army, that way if its a cold night the clothing will be practical....or dress up as railroad engineers with lanterns (very practical), dungarees, red scarfs, hat and give them train whistles. Trust me, you'll hear them every 2 minutes....ha ha.
