My son has severe nosebleeds and I have been told that they could cauterize his nose to help stop it. The only thing that I have been doing to try and curb these is to keep his nose moist by putting vaseline inside his nostrils. Are there any other alternatives or is this the only thing that might really help him?

I had my nose cauterized because of severe nosebleeds due to extremely high blood pressure. It was painless and stemmed the flow to a trickle. From then on I was told by my doctor to keep the inside of my my nostrils moist with vaseline.
Apart from my high blood pressure, my other problem was that I had a crooked septum which increased the air-flow over the membrane of one nostril. The ENT doctor said that I could in future have my septum straightened to alleviate the problem. It may be that your son has something wrong with the structure of his nose.
My GP said that commercially available nasal sprays just made the situation worse.

I broke my nose a couple of years ago when a horse I was training raised it's head fast I whacked me. The doctor had to cauterize it twice a few months apart, but he only used a silver nitrate stick that burned like h#**, but I never had that type if reaction or ANY reaction for that matter. I would suggest calling the doctor who did the cauterization & ask him. Otherwise, pancake foundation make-up???

When I was in high school I had a really difficult time with frequent nosebleeds. Keeping cool & hydrated is extremely important.
Definitely put a cool ice pack to the back of the neck, under the neck, etc. I had a pass from my doctor that I could go to the gym & shower to reduce my body temperature any time I needed to but ice packs work just as well.
The doctor *didn't* cauterize my nose because he was convinced that in my case it would only bleed worse!

You could try nasal saline spray. Just a thought...it might be more nose-friendly than Vaseline, and easier to apply. How's his blood pressure? Sometimes hypertension can cause nose bleeds. I had some pretty severe nosebleeds in childhood, but as I grew older, they lessened, and then stopped completely.

I had my nose cauterized when I was younger. It burned like hell! I had fewer nosebleeds after.

Remember digital truma is the number one cause of nosebleeds.

Do you have a humidifier in his room?
Who told you about cautery? An ENT doctor?
Has he had bloodwork done to see if he is deficient in any of the clotting factors?

Next time he has a nosebleed, try this. It sounds crazy but try it anyhow because it works:
Ice on the nose and more ice on the back of the neck will usually stop a nosebleed.

When we were young girls (under 10) my sister kept having severe nosebleeds. We had a humidifier in our room, they checked her blood pressure (normal), we had low-salt diets to begin with, and they'd put ice on her forehead and back of the neck. It'd eventually clot and stop, but it was terrifying to just be playing or drawing and suddenly she'd be bleeding like that. So our doctor suggested cauterization and my parents agreed and he did it in the examining room in a couple of minutes. She was always zero-tolerance to any medical pain or procedures (if she saw a syringe she'd faint), but she said it was just a small pinch for a second and didn't even cry. After that, no more nosebleeds again and she's 47 years old now.
