It's their cover....if they were to get a place of their own, how would they explain their income? These people aren't exactly respinsible to begin with.

the freakanomics book is awsome and its answer makes sense.
only the higher up people make enough to live on and the street dealers dont make that much. however the stick with it for the bragging rights among friends, its what they know, dropped out of school, and they hope to move up the ranks to the point were the real money is at.

Because if they had a house in their name, the police could confiscate it if it was thought to be bought with drug money.

i agree with TD. everything is dealt in cash so Mellie is wrong for saying they can't support themselves. their bank accounts make them look poor, not their back yards
