There are a number of possibilities here.
1) go to my computer then look at the drive letter and description.
If it shows as only CD drive then right click on the drive letter then right click on properties. find the drive in the list then highlight it with left click. Then go to properties in the bottom right of the window. right click on hardware then right click on uninstall. This will remove the drive from windows. reboot the computer and let windows find the drive again. this should fix the problem.
2) If 1 does not work try following steps as shown in 1 except when you get to drive properties go to troubleshoot.
3)If 1 or 2 do not work I would suggest have a major problem in the drive and it should be replaced. you can get OEM dual layer DVD writers for under $70.00 thes days so they are quite cheap to replace.

There would be a difficulty contained in the OS / Registry. The DVD area settings would have replaced. The existence of your combochronic would be up. try employing different OS. verify for scratches and verify if DVDs artwork in others' computer. IF no longer, ask your broking

most combo drives use seperate pickups for dvd + cdrw and for cd/cd-r. Your dvd pickup is probably busted.
