Check if the lamp is plugged. If it is, then check if there is electricity in the house itself. If there is, plug the lamp to another electrical outlet. If there is still none, remove the lamp bulb and plug it into another bulb socket and turn the switch to on. If there is no light, then it is time to replace the bulb. If the bulb lights, then the switch mechanism is defective. Recheck the switch spring. If there is none, the the spring was displaced and the repairing process will be easy. If the switch spring is intact, then it is time replace the lamp itself.

Well, if you're blond, I suppose one would wrap a hand around the bulb and proceed to unscrew same. Once the bulb was completely out of said socket, one would probably stick ones finger in the little hole to make sure there really is 110 volts inside that little hole. Because, if there ain't, that bulb sure won't work. WARNING! Don't try this at home kids. It could be VERY dangerous to your health, and could cause serious injury, and or death!

If it's at night and pretty dark I try to look around from where I'm standing (for another switch nearby, another person, a weapon).

If its during the day I just replace the bulb.

Take a deep breath and run across the room with the mental image of the room in your head. Either that or get another light source.

Panic and thrash around the room vigorously, afraid of the darkness.

Then I'd check the plug.
