Because we scare people who are not disabled. We remind them of it could happen to them. Plus everyone only wants to be one of the "beautiful" people

Nice Question.... I'll start out by saying that I have a brother that is disabled so that's why I'm answering your question. I think we also need to figure out what you mean by "treated so badly". Do you mean on a national level or on a more personal level (such as the way two people would interact?). I think that in the world we live in today a lot of people are just not comfortable with people who are different. That is why there is such a huge feeling of discrimination also..... just an idea though

There are two reasons. First because normal people feel guilt and are very eager to avoid contact with the disabled. The second reason is the municipal governments that over-compensate by providing ten times as much disabled parking as are needed. In my hometown we had three disabled persons but in a shopping center were spaces for twenty cars...not much of a problem...but it creates some bad feelings from mothers with kids or older citizens, while not disabled, have difficulty in walking.

Well, I am Australian and I have a disabled brother, and only after he came home from hospital did I realise the feelings towards disabled people. I think it's because they seem different to other people, and unusual, to tell the truth, and they just simply don't understand. I think better education about this stuff would make a whole lot of difference- and anway, disabled people aren't DIS-abled, they are simply DIFFERENTLY-abled. Hope all gets better for you!

lo will... i've got few totally different ideas:
1. well in my opinion our specie is not any different from the most of the animals' family... being the best, the strongest, the fastest, the healthiest and the normal-est is either desire and necessity... any complications and failures make you weaker, slower, etc and as a result just useless for a society (it's not my personal opinion)... if you can't follow the basic society expectations it means society may maintain its processes without you- so there's a questions do we really need all of you???
2. what about all of us who had more luck to be absolutely 'normal' being just jelaous of all the exemptions, etc to make your lives easier? i'm sure in most of the cases that is what creates a tension between our communities...
3. or maybe just those little differences in perception of everything that surrounds us?
i, personally, haven't got any disabilities and i have to admit (what a shame!) SOMETIMES i follow those three ideas without any kind of discrimnation... seems like we still enjoy being different but only if we are all the same tho!!!

Anyone remember the joke where the disabled cousin takes his normal cousin to the club and the disabled clubbers kick his a$$ and call him NORMAL BOY.
That joke gets me through when I have a hard time doing stuff I could do if I wasn't disabled. I have the muscle disorder called Chronic Myofascial Pain to go with my Fibromyalgia. They are called "the little death" and "the invisible disability".

sorry but its hard to answer you question without knoning your sensitivity to 'bad treatment'. I think there are something that are bad that are done to people with disabilities but no more than to anyone else. really you should give a few examples because not everybody thinks people are treated badly.

Heck, people without disabilities are treated badly, it doesn't take much for people to look down on you. A simple mistake in your life etc.
Just being different is the problem.

People can be so cruel when someone is different or has a disability...They say mean things without first thinking about how it will make the other person feel...Maybe it is because they have insecurities themselves and like to lash out at or about others to make themselves feel less inferior..
We are not suppose to judge or criticize others because no one is perfect...Only Jesus Christ!

I think it's terrible the way people with disabilities are treated. I don't have any myself but I have worked with many people who do.
