Do you mean when do you use indicators? You use them in acid-base titrations to determine when you have reached the end point.

what do you mean?? is it' when do you use the indicators'. when you want to check if a solution is acidic or alkaline..If its for acid-base titration, to know whether you have reached the end point. you use different indicators depending on the acid and the base and the pH at which the endpoint is achieved. For eg:if its a titration btw strong acid and strong base, then you can use almost any indicator. if its btw a strong acid and a weak base, we use methyl orange or methyl red, because its pH range is 3.1-4.5 and 4.2-6.2 respectively.if the titration is btw weak acid and strong base then we can use phenopthalein as its pH range is 8.3-10.0. for weak acid and weak base no indicator is satisfactory.i hope this is what you wanted. i am sorry if i was of no help. please construct the question clearly and I'll be happy to give you more info.
