i lifted a heavy box and i've had a pain in the sides of my lower back, the butt area specifically for about 6 weeks, i've went for chiro treatment and he recommended stretches, but the pain always comes back it seems as though i pulled a muscle on both sides, and its very stiff and sensitive sometimes, and they say its a muscle strain, any idea on how long this condition can last or what is the best treatment, some people recommended physiotherapy but i'm not sure if it can make things worse or not? Any suggestions for treatment, or how long this will last, i'm only 27 and never have been hurt like this ever, thanks so much for your help

sounds like a combination muscle strain and sacroilliac sprain (ligaments) one chiro treatment wasn't enough. 5-6 adjustments within a 2 weeks period would be warranted, as well as some physiotherapy (ultrasound, electrical stimulation) which could also be provided by your chiropractor. Our low backs are our weak points. At 27 you don't want his to linger and accelerate the degenerative process in that area. Manual manipulation is the #1 treatment choice for musculoskeletal complaints like this. Make a commitment to yourself and alleviate your complaints, because you'll have to lift something or contort your body again at somepoint and the second low back occurance will be worse and we don't want to think about the third one, and so on.

if it is constant pain - it is in a muscle spasm - which if not treated correctly can take up to about 6-8 weeks to start to subside. You needed to put ice on it the first few days to relieve swelling and then moist heat to reduce tension. Also try Advil or such for the inflammation ( if you are still having pain now it is still inflammed (swollen) The only concern I have is if it has not gotten any better at all yet - then there could be more to it than just a pulled muscle - you could very well have a disc problem - please get a second opinion right away! If it is only muscle problems then you can still do the moist heat and as soon as you take off the moist heat - lay on your bed on your back and do your stretches (start off very slowly - only a few and stop if you have severe pain and go to the doctor) You might need a prescription medicine for inflammation.

I hurt my back on a job yrs ago. I took physical therapy which helped so much.. trust me its the best way. it lasted me 12 weeks, most insurances will pay. Stretches are also good but let the therapist tell you how to do them first.. I see a chriopractor every week for my back. I couldn't make it without him adjusting me.. There are times I cant even move and I hurt so bad.. I would rather see him then pop all kinds of pills. However; I do take Ibuprofen if the pain gets to intense before I get adjusted. Also if the muscles are strained or pulled.. DO ICE>> not HEAT!! best of luck to you. hope you feel better soon :)

I have the same thing only my pain comes from degenerative arthritis, and a stress fracture that refractures easily (of my lower lumbar spine),,even if i lift something around ten pounds. the pain at the sides of your bottom could be the sciatica nerves that run down either side of the buttocks, pinched nerves and swelling of the lower back can cause them to hurt...very painful indeed. forget the chiropractors and get an mri or pet scan... I have had it for 20 years and doctors insist that it shouldn't hurt...haha.

ps the reason i say forget the chiropractors is because i knew a massage therapist who worked for three of them and all of them told her to massage them after they *crack 'em to keep em comming back*. That freaked me.

You may have a broken or bruised tailbone. You should speak to a orthopedist (bone doctor) and perhaps get an MRI of your spine and left side. Try icing your tailbone in the meantime. The pain may be radiating down your leg from the tailbone and icing the tailbone area will help.

My father had the same problem. Stretching helped. But very little. The doctors didn't help any either. So we try giving him massages. The only problem with that is, his muscles are extremely tight so a deep tissue massages. It loosens him up. That way his muscles aren't tight and he isn't feeling any pain. I don't know if this applies to you though. Are your muscles tight?

Sounds like you have pressure on your sciatic nerves and/or a sprain. Getting physical therapy is probably in order, but see your doctor or an orthopedic specialist to be sure you haven't herniated some disks or ruptured anything.
