Lil Abner.

This was the premier political commentary cartoon of its day, although it was watered down for mass consumption by the 60's onward. It probably influences modern culture more than any other cartoon strip ever written.

Sadie Hawkins Day dances, for example, are directly from the Lil Abner cartoon.

At least ask where the cartoon characters lived so that it seems somewhat relevant to geography (Dogpatch, by the way).
