I have a ton of crocheted doillies, like all grandmothers had back in the 40's and 50's.Some are star shaped, others are round, but they all have a (fringe) of sorts. This (fringe) is much larger than the center design. I know you need a liquid starch and a large enough space to pin down the doillie. But I don't have a clue exactly how it is done, or how you get the (fringe) to a pleasing shape. I have seen how some (fringe) are like rolling waves. How do you pin a doillie to achieve a shape that looks good and shows off the detail of the crocheted pattern? I need serious help since I would like keep some of the prettier doillies my Mother kept of her mothers.

My mother also had the doilies you describe. She had a piece of cork that was covered with a towel and she pinned it down with RUSTPROOF pins. For the "waves" you describe, she laid cans, jars etc (whatever was available) on it's side and covered it with waxed paper. The doilie edges were then smoothed over the rounded surface. By the way, she used sugar water to stiffen them. They stood up like little soldiers! I would recommend a good liquid or spray starch.

lay them flat to dry and for the curls and waves use clothepins to put them back in wait until they are dry to remove clothespins and you could use some spray starch on them after you pin them that will help hold the waves and curls in.

wash them by hand and roll them up in a towel twist to get the water out of them then lay them flat. If you don't have time to iron them you can leave them rollled in the towel and put it in the frig until your ready to iron on the lowest setting
