Jitterbug, Lindy Hop, Charleston, Shags and Waltzes are not considered to be specifically notably popular dance styles for the 1950's They Pre-date the 1950's as most of the links below indicate.
Foxtrot is from 1907. It's still popular today. Would you consider it a popular dance of the 1950s? You could. Under that logic, you can include all the popular dances of years prior to 1950 that are still popular as of 1960. Heh!

My mom says Waltz and Foxtrot were very popular in Europe. The fasion in Europe was a little behind because Europe was still recovering from WWII. My comment: the waltz she's talking about had a tempo of Vienneze Walts, but not nearly as much turn and traveling in every step.
