I think, what you meant to say is that you upgraded your system to Windows Me from Windows 98, so you are now running Windows Me.

Unfortunately, neither version of Windows was any good. They both sucked in their own way, but believe it or not I still have a computer that's running Windows 98 and another that's running Windows Me. I use to have a computer that was running Windows 95, but the mouse on the tread mill died that ran the thing and I couldn't train another one, so I trashed it (LOL).

Anyway, I think your problem is being caused by several things. One thing you mentioned is that you have some 2000 drivers, if I'm not mistaken Windows Me is not compatable with 2000 drivers, so there's part of your problem.

The other problem probably has to do with the speed of your computer, the amount of memory, and the Windows stacks (again memory).

Windows Me loads more drivers than Windows 98 did, so it required more computer as far as processing speed and ram than Windows 98. Also, upgrading from Windows 98 means you are bringing alot of the problems with you; that is unless you bought the stand alone version and wiped out the hard drive and installed the Windows Me from scratch.

I hate to say it, but it might be time to think about upgrading to a new computer. As far as freeware goes, I don't think I would trust the security of my computer to something you get for free, but then that's me. Have you ever heard the old saying, "You get what you pay for!"

You can't be a hero to everyone. With a setup like that I think you're going down with the computer. Tell them I admire you for even trying to fix that mess. Good luck.

Avast! is a better free anti-virus than AVG... swap them out. Get Ad-Aware for spyware scanning. I'm not sure what you mean with WinME piggybacking on Win98....? Maybe its Win98SE ?
