You have it backwards. The sound card is a system drain not just to your power supply but your CPU as well. When you turn off your sound card in the games options that is one less thing for your computer to process hence the performance improvement which adds up to less lag. Everything you add to your computer effects your system performance, even your video card. I know that sounds confusing but it does. The video cards on the market today are so fast that they make up for their system drain by providing you with lighting fast game performance. There are charts in the average computer repair book that shows you what each component drains from you computer. This is the biggest reason it has been so important for computer processors to get much faster then they where, lets say ten years ago. About the only thing out there today that effects a computers processor speed is a virus or tons of add-wear pop ups that sneaked in through downloads, other than that today's processors can burn through about anything..

If sound affects your gaming, you must be on integrated. Integrated chips share the processor and RAM with the rest of the PC. Having on-board sound will take CPU cycles. If the graphics unit can't access the CPU like it should, then it will be slow.

There's no way you can have a graphics card and the sound gives you lag. You must have integrated graphics, or the GeForce 5200.
