Possibly a plugged fuel filter. It would probably be a good time to take it to a shop you trust and have them check it over and see if it needs a tune up. Also winter is coming so it,s a good time to have things checked over anyway as you don,t want to be stranded on a cold winters day.

Your problem may be due to improper ignition timing, clogged catalytic converter, clogged EGR valve or defective EGR solenoid or fouled/worn spark plugs. I do suggest having a complete tune-up done and have the catalytic converter and oxygen sensors checked as well as the onboard computer using a OBD tester. A head gasket that isn't sealing properly can cause loss of power as well. A clogged transmission filter (If it is an automatic) can cause sluggish operation going uphill. In any case, have it checked out. I would also have the valve clearance adjusted, because improperly adjusted valves can lead to a loss of power as well.

you don't have enough horsepower to get up the hill. it's working really hard to get uphill, which uses more gas b/c it's taking longer to get uphill (or maybe you have a gas leak). it runs smoothly downhill because gravity is acting on it, so the engine doesn't need to work as hard.

we have the same problem in our 91 sunbird le but our prblem is the transmission, it shifts going up hill and when you step on it, it changes back to where it was climbing the hill better. maybe you have the same problem, check your tranny fluid or get a tune up.
