While layering is very common, it is not present in every sedimentary rock. Chalk, for example, is not very layered, and many limestomes and mudstones do not show good layering.

There is no single characteristic of all sedimentary rocks that is shared, but the two major, distinct groups have common characteristics.

Clastic sedimentary rocks are made of particles, ranging in size from microns to meters. This covers your standard conglomerates, sandstones, shales, and most limestones.

Chemical sedimentary rocks are made of precipitates, and are generally very fine grained. This covers evaporates and some limestones.

If you consider precipitates as sedimentary particles in solution, then the one characteristic is 'made out of particles.'

When I look at a sedimentary rock the first thing I try to determine is grain size.

Some Common Sedimentary rocks

Sanstone color: red or gray, composition : sand grains cemented together

Limestone : white to gray, calcite and sometimes fossils

Shale: Dark Gray, Compacted mud.

Conglomerate: Different Colors, Rounded cobbles and pebbles cemented

together
