Remove radiator cap (when car is cool). Start engine and watch -- if you can see lots of bubbles -- head gasket is most likely the problem. Stuck or malfunctioning thermostat will only make the car overheat.

Your description gives all the warning signs of a bad head gasket. With the radiator cap in place the cooling system is sealed up and the coolant level in the overflow tank will raise and lower somewhat as the vehicles temperature goes from cold to hot and if it as you say is overflowing the coolant bottle then it either has air trapped in the system or it is overheating, either of which is not normal and indicates a problem that you need to have checked out by a good repair facility.

if the coolant does not drain back into the radiator after the car cools spend 5 bucks on a new radiator cap first then go for the thermostat....... head gasket; is there smoke coming out the rear?

How fast does the bubbles start?
if immediately then check the oil and pull the S.plugs and see if any are coolant fouled.if so then you have a cracked head or (less likely) a blown head gasket.
If it takes a few minuets then it could be a bad water pump or thermostat.also check the hoses for collapse when the engine is shut off.

It's your thermostat. U will need a new one. I read this to my husband and he told me and he knows alot about car. He said it will be $3-$10 at Autozone. Don't listen to them. If it was your head gasket it would be oil. They don't know what they are talking about. Even I know that.

sounds like the compression/exhaust gasses are entering your cooling system. it could be blown head gasket, warped heads, or cracked head and/or block.
