Lot of time(10 years) but there are many more refs. still running good and looking good that are older. Much depends on how the owner has taken care of it over the years. So ==having said that==would you keep the ref. a longer time if the fan was working ? Or are you just "tired" of looking at it ? A evaporator fan is easily replaced by a serviceman. Your old fan motor propably has worn out bearings , causing it to perhaps start==squeal==slow down--on and on. Call around in your local area for a repair shop==tell him your problem==ask for a estimate. Have the ref. name/model # ready at hand to give them. This repair job will cost much less than buying a new ref.==if you intend to buy a used ref.--you could be alright--but , then again you might get another problem. Let the buyer beware is the old saying. I would think about having the fan replaced==if the price is right and you like the box other-wise. Good Luck in your decision.

The fan is not made to run all the time. The fan is to circulation air to keep a even temperature.Listen to your refrigerator,it will kick on and shut down every hour. You should be okay if there is no food spoilage.
