what does x times -x equal? and the answer isn't -x^2

The answer is -1*x^2 which equals -(x^2) but not (-x)^2

The answer is -x^2 (negative x squared)

x * -x = -x^2
(x) times (-x) = negative x squared

In other terms:

1x * -1x = -1x^2
(1x) times (-1x) = negative 1x squared

The product of a negative and a positive is always negative
The product of a positive and a positive is always positive
The product of a negative and a negative is always positive

x time -x is -(x^2)

not (-x)^2.

try it with x = 2

2 times -2 = -4 = -(2^2)

-(x^2)... you have to have x squared in the parentheses or you won't have a negative answer which is required in this example. I'm a Math teacher, so you can trust this answer.

So -x squared is your answer.

If you are working on pre-algebra it should be -X. A negative times a positive is always a negative.
