Apple. It's true that updates for Mac OS usually come out later than the Windows version, BUT on a new Apple computer you can run both Mac OS and Windows, so it's not a problem. When there's a Mac version of the software you want to run, Macs are more user-friendly, less prone to crashing, and they match your iPod. And when there's not a Mac version, you can just switch to Windows and use that one.

Another nice thing about Macs is that for almost every accessory you can buy (printers, mice, keyboards, USB-powered portable fans, etc.) you just plug it in and it works, whereas for Windows you almost always have to install software. Plus Macs provide really good tech support when something breaks, whereas if you have Windows you have to deal with Microsoft. And speaking of Microsoft, they make an inferior product and have taken over by agressively pushing the competition out the way and deliberating making their software incompatible with other systems - not a company you should want to give money to.

BTW, I agree with whoever it was that said you're spoiled rotten - when I was 13 my parents only got me a desktop for Christmas even though I wanted a laptop :) I ended up buying myself an iBook like a year later.

One last thing... this is kind of random, but if you do decide on an Apple, it's something you'd probably never think of on your own. The MacBook Pro is the higher end computer, and it's over-all better except for one thing. The MacBook has (I believe) the same plastic exterior as the old iBooks, whereas the MacBook Pro has a metal exterior like the old PowerBooks. Fine. But having dropped two PowerBooks and one iBook, I can tell you that the metal warps when it falls, usually destroying everything inside, whereas the plastic can usually stand up to it. So if you're prone to dropping things, you might want to think about the MacBook simply because it's less prone to breaking, and is probably still fast enough for everything you're going to use it for. And if you do go for the MacBook Pro, I've learned from experience that a $60 case really is a good investment to protect a $3000 computer. Just a suggestion :)

I would recommend an Apple MacBook. Not only do you get a very, very fast and powerful computer for under $1000, you also get Apple's excellent Mac OS X operating system. And not to fret, all Apple machines can run Windows (at full speed) in addition to OS X. I could go on for years about why I recommend Apple. A few main points: Apple's OS X has zero viruses, Apple is the highest rated company in consumer satisfaction, Apple has the lowest rate of repair of any computer company, Apple machines are the only computers that can run OS X and Windows. I've listed a few articles below to explain some of this to you and to prove that what I say is indeed true. Feel free to email me with any questions, I will be happy to explain: shearerspam@gmail.com

P.S. - Whoever told you Apple's are outdated is an idiot. They obviosly know nothing about computers. Apple machines are just as powerful as any other manufacturer, Dell, HP, whoever. They all use the same parts pretty much.

Apple is not really that outdated. The main difference nowerdays from the usability standpoint is that PCs are leaning to 64bit processing (with processors like AMD's Athlon FX or Turion and even X2 series, but also Intel is joining in the 64 bit fun with it's new Core Duo 2 line of desktop and laptop processors). As a user you won't feel much of a difference for now (except for Apple's kick *** interface). Sure you'll need a 64bit machine sometime in the next couple of years, but for now it boils down to one thing (if money is no problem): you can legally install Windows on a Mac, not the other way around.

Dude, don't wimp out, run Linux. You don't have to pay money to the greedy, honorless Microsoft, nor the aesthetic, technologically-backward hippies at Apple. You'll get the best tech support in the world (because every computer junkie and programming guru will be trying to prove their machismo by answering your question best and fastest), every program will run if you try hard enough, and you won't have to deal with stupid glitches or silly tutorials, because you have the most advanced, most openly scrutinized OS ever made.
Who cares if you're 13? Start from an early age. Learn the way to use computers correctly. I know price isn't a problem, but if you're really up for it, make your own computer. I know kids doing it at age 11. It's really worthwile.

Most computer stores allow you to try laptops right in the store... why not experiment a bit and see how you like each kind. I've used both computers, and I still prefer Windows... but that's just me. It's a very personal decision, so the best way is to just try out both and see which one you really enjoy using. I know a lot of Apple users, and they seem happy.

The best of the high end machines are the made-for-Windows machines.

There is a strong possibility that the DRM on Apple is much nastier than on a PC laptop, but I have no link to confirm that.
