When girls boast that they are these tiny sizes, it turns out that these sizes aren't that tiny at all. A true size 0 measurements are 31-23-33. How many of you size 0's can honestly say these are your measurements? I've heard that some size 0 clothes have a 25/26 inch waist. That is really a size 4/6, that is a big difference.

So really all these tiny sizes don't mean that people are really that skinny, it just means clothes sizes have been downsized, without actually reducing the measurements! So what used to be a 4 is now a 2 and what used to be a size 2 is now a 0.

All this vanity sizing is just there to make women feel better about themselves, it's all BS. Why can't they just label all clothes with the true measurements. There there would be no confusion and no crap.

They do it that way in Japan. Like the three measurements...bust, waist, and hips. That's all you really need to find your size in most things. I'd really rather have the three measurements on clothes labels than "0" or "6" or whatever. "Omigosh, like, you're a size seven? FATTY! Go eat your twinkies!" Yeah yeah yeah. I've heard it before. Or "Omigosh, you're like, a size two? I'M SO JEALOUS OMGOMGOMG!" Uh-huh, heard that too.

Bottom line: Three measurements seem more efficient.

38 back. B cup. Usually a girl with a 38 back will have a larger rib cage. She doesn't necessarily have to be overweight. I'm a 34 back and consider myself an average/slim build. The cup size of B is on the smaller scale, and the bigger the back size the smaller that cup is. For example- A girl who is a 34 B will look proportionately bigger than a girl who is a 38 B. To get an even comparison on the cup only: When you go up a back size, you come down a cup size, Example 2) If someone is wearing a 32 DD, the equivalent cup size in a 34 band would be a D. So yes, it's probably a small cup size. But it's hard to tell if the girl is overweight. As i said, she might just have a larger rib cage.

It's not necessarily vanity, but also a question of the average size of people in the Market.

For example a 'petite'/'small' from the US could fit someone wearing 'medium' in South East Asia, but a 'petite'/'small' in South East Asia would not fit a 'petite'/'small' in the US.

It would make sense to label the clothes with the 'true' measurements, but the cut of the clothing also makes a difference to how you look in them, and how comfortable you feel. For example, it's not only the bust size, but also the height of the pleats that matters.

That is why you should try the clothes on before buying. If you like shopping via the Internet or catalogues, you will have to experiment and see which brands and sizes suit you. Different brands have different characteristics.

For example, some of my friends tell me I should never buy Burberry (I'd never spend that kind of money, but this is just an example) because the sleeves tend to be short, and I am relatively lanky.

Once I wore a dress that said it was a size 4 but I knew I wasn't a size 4. It was stupid.
Don't you hate having to try on ALL the pants even though they say they're the same size? But maybe 1/2 of them will be too big, the other 1/2 too small. But men can just go by measurements.

I agree. Clothes sizes vary greatly from store to store there should be some regulation in force. Maybe on the tags they shouldnt have a size on them just the chest, waist and hip measurements,we can then measure ourselves before we go out shopping and easily find clothes that fit.

Funny thing is, men's clothing doesn't do that. Men's clothing is based on actual measurements and believe me, men are just as vain as women about that. The whole sizing of women's clothes come from not wanting to reveal true measurements. It's one of those things that has been going on for decades, if not centuries, and will likely continue for many more. It would be nice to be able to buy clothes like men do. My husband just grabs his size and walks off. I have to try everything on!

Yes, I've noticed this too. In Asia my size is different. I've always been that size but when I got to the US, the size of clothes were much smaller. I dropped down 2 dress sizes when I physically didn't change my build. Of course it felt good but I thought who's fooling whom?

Sizes in Gap are ridiculous. I know they use US sizes, but even after translating to UK sizes they are dodgy, and are just inconsitant. I'll be anything from a 4 to a 10. It's really annoying.
