The priest of our church has a brother who's in some federal law enforcement group (maybe the FBI?). In any case, our church did an impromptu service that night for those needing spiritual reassurance (like me), and our priest told the story - he and his family only knew that his brother had an appointment in the building that morning and would have been in there when the attack took place. They spent hours that day agonizing over what happened to him (you might know that cell calls coming to and going out of NY were almost impossible to make because of the sheer number of people making calls). Finally, about mid-afternoon, his brother answered his phone. I don't remember how, but he had gotten out after the first plane hit. Also, my step-grandfather's son (my step-uncle, I guess) worked on Wall Street and so was right there for everything.

In a sense, though, we all lost someone. I don't know about you, but when I see photos of the firemen going to certain death or photos of young women smiling at a friend's bachelorette party a week before the tragedy or a picture of someone like Jeremy Glick, Mark Bingham, Todd Beamer, Todd Burnett or Jason Dahl laughing into a camera with someone they love standing next to them - or photos of a child born after their father was killed - when I see those pictures, it feels just as though I lost someone I knew. We all believe the same things in the long run (well, those of us sane enough to not to want to harm innocent people because they're different than us and we don't like them) - we believe that our children should grow up free, happy and without fear. We believe that our families should have us there with them until it's our natural time to go. We believe that we (humanity) has the strength to not just survive, but grow and thrive.

So yeah - even though I didn't "know" them in the personal sense, I lost loved ones. And I still grieve.

I have a friend who's Uncle died in the one that fell first. And a co-worker who's best friend died. He worked for that company , I can't recall the name, it was a brokerage firm, I think. Maybe Morgan Stanley? They never found the bodies of either one.

none of the people that died were personally known to me but I had friends that could have been there and, fortunately weren't so I did spend several hours wondering if they'd died.

but the tragedy touches all of us.

They were all our loved ones. Look at all the policemen and firemen and even a priest who died there.
