You ask who "is" the best pitcher and not who "was" the best, so I take it you would like to know who is the best pitcher this year...
Johan Santana has been the best pitcher in the AL this year and for the past three...2004, 20-6 2.61 - 2005 16-7 2.87 - 2006 18-5 2.75
The best pitcher in the NL is Chris Carpenter and he has been the past two years...2005, 21-5 2.83 - 2006, 13-6 2.97
Strikeouts is only one measure of a pitcher, and yes it's more important that velocity...Control is also very important, as is opponents batting average along with homeruns allowed...

What - you mean besides Johan Santana? He currently leads the Major Leagues in every pitching statistic (18 wins, 230 strikeouts, and a 2.75 ERA). Right now there is no one close to him.

Right now, I would say Johan Santana. But Francisco Liriano is probably going to pass him by next season. And what is even better, they both play for the Twins!

My wife and I received a pitcher and glasses set for our wedding 32 years ago. We still have that pitcher and we now pour drinks for our grandchildren from it.

When Nolan Ryan was in his prime, he was both. Seven No-hitters, 3000+ strikeouts...nobody is ever going to touch that.

Even though I am a dredded YANKEES fan I still can recognize talent when I see it! that being said i think Johan Santana and Dontrell Willis both have TREMENDOS HEART, I just hope that Dontrell gets traded to a team the can give him some run support before he is past his prime so we can all see him SHINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
