Because Buffon saved a powerful header in the 104Th minute and Zidane couldn't take the pressure so he decided to take his frusteration on Materazzi.
Who agrees?

It would be a combination of interactions between Materazzi and Zidane and the emotional nature of the situation. When there is a major prize involved, some people tend to overreact and let their emotions take over. I believe both of the players overreacted in their ways. Both players were intending to be lighthearted, but Materazzi ended up saying something that insulted Zidane. That is probably why Zidane responded in that fashion towards Materazzi...

Materazzi tugged at Zidane's jersey. Zidanse said,"If you like my shirt so much, I will give it to you after the match." Materazzi replied,'I'd rather have your sister..." This angered Zidane so he head-butted Materazzei.

Materazzi was pulling Zidane's jersey and Zidane said something like: "If you like touching my jersey so much I'll give it to you after the match" But Materazzi said "No, I prefer your sister". Then Zidane head-butted him.
Not a great insult, more of a stupid joke that Zidane took too seriously.
Zidane is too hot-headed. Materazzi was probably joking around.

I thought it was because Materazzi called Zidane the Italian equivalent of 'n*****', and then insulted both his mother and his Muslim background by saying he is the "son of a terrorist whore."
But who really knows but the two of them?

My question is how in hell can France (and the entire world) still support Zidane and call him a hero when his last act as a member of the French national team was an embarassing, stupid, and senseless headbutt? Being his last game, he should have focused more than ever on representing his country with integrity and bringing the World Cup home. Instead he loses his cool over a stupid insult. Besides Italia would have won anyways. ;)
