When an infant is nursed on mother's milk (breastfed), its poop has (nearly) no smell. Formula-fed infants have more odorous poops. Once an infant starts on solid foods, the poop becomes more smelly. This is normal.

Poop smells like it does as a result of the products of bacterial action. Bacteria produce smelly, sulfur-rich organic compounds such as indole, skatole, and mercaptans, and the inorganic gas hydrogen sulfide. These are the same compounds that give farts their odor.

Foods that have high odors can make the poop smell like that food. Onions and garlic (high in sulfur compounds), for instance, are easily detected in poop and fart smells. Purple grape juice can change the smell of poop (and possibly red wine made from such grapes). Asparagus can alter the poop smell, too. Meat eaters have stronger-smelling poop than vegetarians and vegans. Try avoiding any smelly foods for a few days, and then add them back to your diet, you will notice the change in smell.

Some people maintain that poops and farts smell like the food they contain/came from. While I think this is true to a degree, poop certainly smells like stuff you never ate, due to the processing it has gone through.

I'm sure you've smelled poop, but if you're asking so that you may diagnose a medical condition based on a change in poop smell (of your own or a child's), you need to be much more specific. 'I'm worried that the smell has changed' or 'it now smells like...' for instance. Most frequent cause of change in smell of poop is changing what you're eating or drinking.
