I'm going out on a limb here since I can't actually get into your router, but I think you need to do one or two things.

1) Restart your router. Hopefully this will turn your DHCP server back on. Make sure your laptop is set to have an IP address automatically added. If that doesn't work, try step two.

2) Have whoever set up your router set it up again, but make sure that person turns on whatever security features may be available. It sounds like your router may have been hacked into and essentially stolen or at least messed up.

If you set up your router, then read the manual that came with it and pay special attention to the security section. Don't take it the wrong way. I am a firm believer in learning through your mistakes.

Good luck

You did not say what OS you are using. Assuming that it is Windows XP, you can reach a "Repair" menu entry to click on. To do that, look in the lower right hand corner of the screen. There is probably an icon picture of a computer or CRT with "waves" coming out of it. Put the mouse cursor over it, then do a right-hand-button mouse click. The resulting menu has an item on it labeled "Repair". Highlight and click on that. It will attempt to do just that: repair the network connection.
(I assume that you have undone the changes you made when trying to set the IP address youself. In particular, that the TCP/IP properties are set to get the IP address automatically.)

If it shows connected but with limited or no connectivity, right click on the network icon in the system tray and select 'repair'. Also try rebooting the router first, make sure you leave it turned off for at least 20 seconds before turning it back on again and allow it 2 minutes to boot.

(I'm assuming Windows 98/2000/XP)

Try these:

1) reset the wireless router. ie, unplugg it, then plug it back in.

2) Start->Run "command", then type "ipconfig /renew" at the prompt. Sometimes this works for me.

Good luck!

255.255.0.0 i believe this is not a proper gateway address, this is a subnet mask... try tying these at your command prompt.

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

this should work otherwise contact your admin....
