You are completing the square.
Divide the coefficient of the x term by 2, then square it.
-4/2 = -2
(-2) squared is 4
y = x^2 - 4x - 5
y = (x^2 - 4x + 4) - 5 - 4
y = (x-2)^2 - 9
a = 1, h = 2 and k = -9

x^2-4x-5=0 now the fabricated from the first and the third time period shoud be equivalent to the fabricated from the 2d time period chop up into yet another 2 tems, x^2- 5x+x-5=0 x(x-5) +a million(x-5)=0 (x-5)(x+a million)=0 for this reason, x-5=0 or x+a million=0 for this reason, x= 5 or -a million

This requires a process called "Completing the Square"
You want to change from one form to another without changing the value of the equation.
Check out the following site for information and a detailed description of how to accomplish this task.

Note (x-h)^2 = x^2-2hx+h^2
if -2h=-4 then h = 2 or h^2 = 4
So add and subtract h^2 = 4
y = x^2-4x-5 = (x^2-4x+4)-4-5
y = (x-2)^2-9

y=x^2 - 4x - 5
y=x^2 -4x + 4 - 9
y=(x - 2)^2 - 9
so a=1, h=2, and k=-9
