Whatever you do - be HONEST. Most employers do background checks, so if you lie, you're done. Now, if your gap is due to having done something less-than-stellar, be honest about it, but tell the employer what you learned from the mistake. We all screw up - but it takes a real class act to not only be accountable, but talk about how it changed you. Good luck!!!

Of course you don't want to lie, but if there are lots of resumes and yours has gaps (under the honesty clause), you may never get the chance to "explain" it away.
I would recommend putting a header of "professional experience", and then listing the companies, jobs, etc., but just don't put years. On the resume it will pass the first sniff test, and then if they call you in for interview, you have the opportunity to explain what you were doing -
Only thing is, if you were doing prison time for a felony, and you lie about it, you may lose your job at any time.

Stick with the most important thing in a resume -- the truth.
Never try to B.S. your way into a job, the truth will come out sometime and it could hurt you real bad. Would you like it if the employer wasn't truthful, told you he was going to pay a certain rate then pay less -- or give less vacation and benifits than he told you just to get you to take the job?
It works both ways - be truthful.

be honest and say that things were just difficult in the job market at that time. however, after much searching you were able to find something. something like that, or you could say that you used that time for some soul searching to help you focus on your career down the road. a find yourself journey or something. some employers eat that stuff right up.
