I know several white Davenport families in southern Illinois, but no Washingtons. Why is it that when the slaves were given the opportunity to pick a last name so many picked White?

Not a tennis fan, are you. Check out Lindsay Davenport -she's white. Actually, I've never known anyone named Davenport who was black. I've known more people named Washington who are black than white, but a few whites with that name as well.

I think when slaves were freed many of them chose last names for themselves and many picked names of former presidents. I didn't know Davenport was common so I don't know about that.

I have also wondered about this exact question and also have no good answer for it . "Jefferson" also seems to be a mostly black name as well. Presumably, a lot of slaves took the names after George and Tom. The first name "Otis" is also mostly black, it seems. I am white and so was my uncle, Otis, but when I spoke of him to someone once, he asked me "You have a black uncle?" Now that's stereotyping!
