The perimeter of PRST is 10 more than 5(RS). If PR=36, find RS.
I've tried so many equations, just can't figure it out.
Thanks, and excuse my sloppy renditions.

How am I cheating? I completed my homework yesterday but I didn't understand a few problems. Am I being a bad student by trying to figure them out? If I didn't care I could just write down the answer that is in the back of the book and be done with it.

The answers above keep changing.
First math girl said 24, now, she has corrected it to 20 2/3
The other 24 answer I do not get.
Everyone left out steps.
call PR and TS = A
call RS and TP = B
..______B?___
..|........................ |
..|........................ |
A|36.....................|A36
..|___________|
..............B?
mathgirl has the correct equation
2 A + 2 B = 5 B + 10 ( the perimeter is equal to 5 times side B
............................... +10 more )
A = 36
2 ( 36) + 2 B = 5B + 10
72 + 2B = 5B + 10
72 + 2B -10 = 5B + 10 - 10
2B + 72 - 10 = 5 B
2B + 62 = 5 B
2B + 62 - 2B = 5B - 2B
62 = 3 B
62 / 3 = 3B / 3
20 2/3 = B
CHECK
2 ( 36 ) + 2 ( 20 2/3 ) = 5 ( 20 2/3 ) + 10
72 + 41.33333 = 5 ( 20 2/3 ) + 10
72 + 41.33333 = 103.33333 + 10
113.33333 = 113. 33333
If you use the answer in the book, you get, as a check,
72 + ( 2 x 14 ) = 5 (14 ) + 10
72 + 28 = 70 + 10
100 = 80
which is wrong
the book lies...
hope this helps clear the equation up a bit...

PRST=10+5(RS)
PR=36
36+2RS+36=10+5(RS)
2RS+72=10+5(RS)
62=3(RS)
24=RS
As the rectangle has equal sides for PR and ST (per your diagram) as well as RS and TP, just pop in the value for both and solve. Don't forget that perimiter is all sides (like I just did). I think it may be a typo in the back of your book if it says 14.

I'm assuming PRST is a parallelogram.
Let x = length of PT, then it follows that x = length of RS
Let y = length of PR, then y = length of ST
The perimeter is
P = 2x + 2y so
2x + 2y = 10 + 5x
Subtract 2x from each side
2y = 3x + 10
You are given that PR = 36, so that means y = 36
2(36) = 3x + 10
72 = 3x + 10
62 = 3x
62/3 = x

1st seem for opportunities to do eliminating. in case you upload eq1 and eq3, both x and y drop out, supplying you with x - y + z = 0 -x + y -2z = -2 ----------------- ......... -z = -2, so z = 2 2 variables dropping by the wayside rapidly is a nontypical present. upload eq2 and 2(eq3) and y drops out: 3x - 2y + 6z = 9 -2x + 2y - 4z = -4 ----------------------- x .......... + 2z = 5 ............... now plug in z = 2 x + 4 = 5 x = a million now plug x = a million and z = 2 into eq1 a million - y + 2 = 0 3 - y = 0 y = 3 You upload multiples of equations to make variables drop out, many times a million variable at a time.

no clue! my guess is 50 and I multiplied 10 times 5 that may be so far off base it isn't even funny! I want to know the answer too. I suck at math.
