A few days ago, the cursor stopped tracking properly. Now I am getting messages that the computer is not recognizing "the device." Is it a glitch or do I need a new mouse? I am techno-ignorant and would appreciate real help.

I'd love to clean it but don't know how. Sorry to sound dumb but I don't know if it an optical mouse. My husband bought for me, but he died and I can't ask him. I thank everyone for the help!

if your mouse is an optical mouse, yes, then you would need to replace it. If wireless try to replace the batteries.

GOOD LUCK!

Turn off computer, unplug the mouse, plug mouse back in, and then turn the computer on and see if it finds the "new device". If not, find the drivers to install so the computer recognizes the mouse. If this doesnt work, buy a new mouse.

Try cleaning it if that doesn't work try to borrow another mouse and see if it is the mouse.

go to your control panel and go to the one that has a mouse and keyboard on it. it should tell you what the problem is if not you need a new mouse.
