There are different types of wireless when it comes to laptops.
There is the type you get from the cellular phone company this is not widely used. You usually have to insert a card in a slot in the laptop( PC/PCMIA ) into the laptop and sign up for the service from the cell company . This is mostly used by business people.
Then there is wireless broadband the type that is all over the place Colleges and Universities, coffe shops, homes etc. Most newer laptops have the equipment built in to connect to wireless internet but always ask to make sure what type the laptop supports. There are 3 main types of wireless networks A,B and G. To set it up in house you need to get a Wireless router to plug your existing broadband connection into.
Hope this helps you out and gives you a basic idea of how it works.

Wireless Internet basically requires three pieces of technology. Sometimes these are combined.
(1) Something to connect to the internet (i.e. ADSL or Cable Modem)
(2) Something to create a wireless network (i.e a wireless router or 'gateway')
(3) An adapter for you laptop to connect to the wireless network.
These days (1) and (2) are often combined and (3) will normally come as part of your laptop.
Once you have the right technology, it is usually just a matter of following the installation guides of each device to get it going, and then depending on the unit, probably a lot of time on the phone to various helpdesks.
If you were after a technical explanation of the frequencies, packet (data) management etc, then I might have to leave that to someone else.
Cheers.

I have cable high speed with a wireless modem at home. I have to switch settings when I take it to college with me.
If your buying one, make sure you get the wireless capability installed with the new laptop.

There is a cell phone inside your laptop which places the call to your properly equipped internet provider. The call is completed just like a dial-up call from your home computer system but usually not as fast.
