On my 1993 Dodge Shadow the damn thing would not shift into reverse or first, the clutch was taken apart and althougth the clutch lining did not show much wear, the rivits holding the lining were working loose and falling out and rolling around in the clutch assembly. Bottomline, I had to replace clutch parts.

Try double clutching it to go into reverse, If your pedal isn't releasing to high or too low when going forward. This method usually works.especially if you have a hydraulic clutch. Check the fluid level in the slave cylinder. It looks like a brake master cylinder only a little smaller If low fill it with dot 3 brake fluid. If it's real low you have a leak.If this works and it usually does then it's free info without money coming out of your pocket. I hope this is the case for you because tranny work costs BIG! If it's cable actuatedThen you may need to replace your clutch

I doubt your engine is a 6.1 liter in a Sunbird. More likely a 2.2 liter. Check the cable ends atop the transmission and see if they are binding. You may have to give them a shot of silicone spray for now, but you may end up replacing them. You will have to remove the air cleaner to get to the shift cables. There are two of them.

Your clutch is about to go bad when shifting into reverse or first becomes difficult.

Your synchronizer is about to go bad (or already went bad - oops) which means you need a new synchronizer or another transmission.

As the posters already said - having the year and model will help.

IF IT HAS CABLE SHIFT YOU WILL NEED TO REPLACE THE CABLES THERE IS NOT AN ADJUSTMENT ON THOSE WHEN THEY GET TIGHT. YOU MIGHT GET SOMEONE TO TRY PUTTING SOME GRAPHITE SPRAY IN THE HOUSINGS IF YOU CAN GET ENOUGH IN THERE IT MIGHT LOOSEN THEM.
