I have heard that. Maybe because the left side is closer to your heart than the right hand. It is tradition to wear the ring on the left that is why it is followed. It probably has some old religious meaning and people just kept the tradition. Many things we do just because our ancestors did it before us. Sometimes it has no meaning.
For example why do we use a Christmas (evergreen) tree every year? It has nothing to do with Jesus. If you look up the history you will find that the church wanted to get pagans to join Christianity so they added evergreen trees to Christmas because pagans worshiped evergreen trees because the trees never seem to die. See we still all worship trees every year all because our ancestors have done it for centuries for no real reason at all.

No. They don't HAVE to do anything. Many married people wear no ring. One is married in one's heart, not on one's hand. But to find the history of wedding rings, google Wedding Rings+tradition. You should come up with a suitable historical answer

I think it is because in general most people are right handed. They think they have traced it back to a time when people were physically designed to thrust or throw spears with one arm predominantly built for it with the muscles and the other for guiding. Which was shown to be the right hand arm for thrusting and left for guiding. I am not sure but because we tend to be right handed a ring can cause problems such as getting in the way when working with your hand you use primarily or getting caught on things when working. Along with the chances of wearing it out sooner or breaking it or knocking out diamonds. Possibly?
