After salaries and other costs, the earnings go to the production companies that financed the movie. Here is a link to the production company listing for Pirates of the Carribean 2 from IMDB, Internet Movie Database.

As to who owns the production companies... they may be owned by larger companies, or individuals, or shareholders.

A lot of movies fail.
But a lot of people are making a lot of money in the movie industry. You may even hear some jive from the movie people how audiences are down (they are) and how it hurts the industry.
Think of this -- a big movie comes out. You like it--you pay...
The first time at the theater
The second time renting at Blockbuster
The third time watching it on cable.
The fourth time buying it at Best Buy.
You can pay four different times for the same movie! They are making bank!
And it is an industry -- money made gets invested into the next movie. In fact, the porn industry is making bank too.

Check out the hours worth of credits after the movie. A lot of it goes for their pay days.
Advertising
Bills for everything from the donuts in the morning to the rentals of the trailers for the stars.
Plus enough left over to make the top twenty rich.

the actors/actresses, the director, the making of the movie, the writer, the merchandise, the advertisement, the background people, and all the little people that worked behind the scenes of the movie.
