No. In SE Mich you can put down a fall fertilizer and then seed over it any time in September and it should still germinate this fall. Most fall fertilizers will also do the job of a seed starting fertilizer but make sure it's just fertilizer--no weed killers or anything else added.

The rye or fescues should germinate in a few weeks and the bluegrass in the mix should germinate in about 25 days. So if you have the time to get the work done you still can do it this year.

Rake up these spots. Get rid of any dead grass. Spread seed. Cover with straw. And water. This is the best time to sow grass. Warm days, cool nights. Just like spring. Grass has no problem growing in the spring. Don't mow until 2 weeks after you see 1st sprouts. water daily in early morn for 1st week. Don't fertilize until next late May- early June

Go ahead and seed, you should have a month before freezing temps so the grass should have a chance to take root. You'll still need to do some work on it in the spring but at least there will be something there to work with.

Plant the grass. Water the seeds. See grass in the spring.

I'm not an expert but surely it is still warm enough in your area to go ahead and seed and fertilize the bare spots now, making sure that you keep the seed moist enough to sprout, and possibly covering them with straw. I know I've seen my son-in-law do this in early fall.

Too late for grass.
If you fertilize, use a low nitrogen mix. Potash and potassium will strengthen the grass for the winter.

Go to Scotts.com and sign up for their news letter. They tell you when and what to plant. How to plant and they will send you reminders. It's great.
