Long Black Veil
Ten years ago, on a cold dark night
Someone was killed, 'neath the town hall light
There were few at the scene, but they all agreed
That the slayer who ran, looked a lot like me
The judge said son, what is your alibi
If you were somewhere else, then you won't have to die
I spoke not a word, thou it meant my life
For I'd been in the arms of my best friend's wife
Chorus
She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees
Nobody knows but me
Oh, the scaffold is high and eternity's near
She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear
But late at night, when the north wind blows
In a long black veil, she cries ov're my bones
Repeat Chorus
This is a ole' tradional song...Everyone from Lefty Frizzell, Johnny Cash to the Dave Matthews Band, plus many more has covered this song
Any Nick Drake song also...Long live Nick!!

Well I'd agree with Johnny Cash's Hurt. I know it was a cover but I never heard NIN's version and I know Cash did the song basically by his life. In a sense I didn't think Skin(Sara Beth) was all that sad because I listen to the idea of the ending as well. One of the saddest though to me is Old Hippie by the Bellamy Brothers. Yeah not the traditional sad song but if you listen to it or the second version(although I think they kept the same name) it is really sad.
Oh and someone saying about Long Black Veil reminds me of Confederate Railroad's song "Three Verses".

True Blue by John Williamson, not so much the song but the fact it has been used in a lot of the tributes to Steve Irwin. It will always be a song that brings a tear to my eye.
