Few points on setting your softener.

Most important is how much Iron is in the water. Take a sample to where you bought to softener and have them test it. I use a Hack Kit to test the ppm of Iron. Along with how many people live in the house will determine how many pounds of salt is used per cycle and how often the cycle needs to be set.

Generally 6lbs of salt and set for every two or three days for a cycle.

Some softeners are , on demand, meaning they cycle as needed and you do not need to set it at all.

Probably the best thing you could do would be to READ THE OWNERS MANUAL FOR USE AND MAINTAINANCE. Most of them have instructions on how to set the dials. You just have to decide how often you want it to cycle. That will depend on how many people are in your family, how much water you use and WHEN you use it.
