Hi, Being a waitress for more than 20 years I can tell you that first it is going to depend on where you are working. Are you working at Denny's or are you working at a Steak House. Second, when ever I trained someone I would always tell them to think of how you like to be treated than take care of your customers higher than that. How you treat your customers really is how people mostly decide how much they are going to leave for a tip. A waitress depends on her tips, not her check. The customary tip is 15-20% these days, but if you take very good care of your customers they will tip more. Also, if you get to know your customers than pretty soon they will start asking for you when they come in. I always looked at my waitressing as a business within a business and I never lacked for customers. I would have people wait for a table to open up in my section. Here is a little fact for you that I don't think your generation knows...what is the meaning of TIP? To Insure Promptness. In the "olden" days the tip was a gift given to the servers as a token of a job well done. When the government starting taxing our tips people just starting leaving them knowing we had to pay taxes on them. It took the fun out of the whole "tipping game." Good luck to you.

Some make $1.65, becaues they're expected to make the rest in tips.
Some experienced waitresses in fine restaurants make $10 - $20 /hour.
Understand that tips are 15% of what the bill is, the most expensive the restaurant the more money you can expect to make in tips.

That depends upon what state you reside in. I think in NYS it's like $3.75 an hour plus tips.
