Agreeing with Corky on the "tint" but disagreeing in that stain is very easy to get off skin unless your skin is very very sensitive to thinners. The only thing you need is either lacquer thinner or mineral spirits. Also if your stain on the wood starts to turn a bit too dark, don't despair, the spirits can help remove some of the excess stain on the top and lighten the piece. Also, if you leave the stain sitting and dry natural without wiping, you will need to sand with a 220 or higher grit paper before putting on your final finish, ie... lacquer sealer or polyurethanes. This will open the pores back up to let the sealer of whatever sorts get in and properly adhere to the material being stained.
After using a lacqer based sealer such as Minwax or Deft, I recommend that you do a second coat. Between coats always sand imperfections and when the fiish is dull then wipe with spirits and let air dry then add next sealer. Steel wool is not the best for the between coats sanding in fact 320 and higher is and if a mirror finish is desired it will take approx. 5-7 days to achieve and sandpapers vary between coats from 220- 2000 grit wet sandpaper (automotive) then finish with rubbing compound and car polish. Weird but true. Have fun and good luck

Assuming you're trying to stain a piece of furniture or wood of some sort, you should probably try staining a piece that isn't connected to the piece you want to keep, to see how dark your stain will be if you just let it air dry without wiping. Wiping takes some of the stain off and will make it lighter than it will be if you air dry it. If you want it real dark then you can air dry it and apply a second coat. Good luck . Work in a well ventilated room and wear rubber or plastic gloves, stain is really hard to get off skin.

If you are talking about a paint type of stain; yes you can if that is the look you want . You may need to put a sealer over it when it dries.
