Molecules are formed by two basic types of bonds, Ionic and Covalent. Ionic bonds occur when the charge of the atoms that make up the molecule cause them to bond. Covalent bonds occur when the atoms bond to share electrons in the outer (valence) shell. These are valence electrons, hence the term covalent bond. Some electrons are used in making the valence of each atom 8 which they try to get by sharing them.

Ionic and covalent bonds are present between similar or different atoms to create molecules. You may also have ionic, covalent or hydrogen bonds between molecules or compounds.
