Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (Russian: Ио́сиф Виссарио́нович Ста́лин, alternatively transliterated Josef Stalin, born Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili was the de facto leader of the Soviet Union from the mid-1920s to his death in 1953 who had studied to be a priest before converting to Marxism .
He attended the Seminary of Tiflis (Tbilisi, Georgia), a Jesuit institution from 1894 and onward. The main reason for entering seminary was the lack of locally available university education though his mother wanted him to be a priest .
His involvement in socialist movement (the branch of it that later became the communist movement) began at the seminary. During these school years, Stalin joined a Georgian Social-Democratic organization, and began propagating Marxism. As a result, he was expelled from the seminary in 1899.
Stalin held the title General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1922-1953),
