They like peanuts a lot! Place some (in the shell) in a container in your yard.
(BTW, when I first read your question, I thought it said "How can I attract squirrels to my poetry" and I was thinking, "This lady is writing poetry for SQUIRRELS????" so I just had to open your question and read it! :)

I don't know why you would do that, they are rats with furry tails, but here is how, Put up a bird feeder, the squirrels follow the birds, they are so smart , that they actually watch for those things.
That will be the draw, then start adding larger nuts like peanuts and walnuts. Squirrels also rob the suet ball in my yard so I guess they like it also, plus peanut butter. Eventually add carrots and greens to their diet, if they eat it is better than all the fast food dried nut junk. A small water bowl in the winter that is kept from freezing is helpful also. Squirrels around my house chew off the young branches in the maple trees to get the sweet maple sap, so I assume that they have a sweet tooth also!
But, why...why...would you invite those house eating, screen chewing, rabies carrying, mange host, flea infested, rodents with in a hundred miles of your home???

Take an ear of field corn, (if you live in the country ask a local farmer for some, or if you live in the city, you can buy them in already shucked and packaged at a farm market or Tractor Supply Store) then take a long nail and cut the head off. Stick one end into the large end of the ear of corn and then holding the corn, push the other end into the bark of a tree. You can watch the squirls as they work to get the kernels free.

The easiest way is to find a farmer who would be willing to sell you some dried ear corn. You can get a bushel very cheap and the squirrels love it. Or put a bird feeder out.I guarentee they will clean it out..A word of warning though ...they will dig holes in your lawn Good Luck !
