I am not what you would call an auto mechanic, but I am no dummy either. I am having problems getting the fuel filter out of my car. The top fuel port comes off easily with a ratchet wrench. The bottom fuel port has a bolt that it takes a crescent wrench to undo. I have to use two wrenches, one to hold the filter in place, and the other to turn the bolt. The bottom bolt isn't budging - all I am doing is stripping the bolt. I am turning it counter clockwise. So what is the problem??? I checked the threads on the new filter, and it looked like I was turning it the right way.

Part II of the question - the oil filter has a clamp that is holding it in place. The bolt that hold the clamp in place stick through the nuts almost look like the Cone Heads. I can't get my ratchet onto the nuts because of the cone heads, and there is no room for a wrench. Do you have to buy a special ratchet wrench for this.

FYI: I have a '97 Honda Civic HX

Tens points to whoever can solve my mystery

I would buy American, BUT they get half as good fuel mileage, and have twice as much maintenance problems. When your American car is 10 years old, and has 130,000 miles on it and hasn't had any maintenance more major that a tune-up every 15K ... then come talk to me.

look closely at the filter and the fuel line. i believe the bottom nut is part of the filter. the line is held and the filter is turned off it. the bottom is made so the connection can be tightened.

For the fuel filter check to see if there are actually 2 nuts. They may be hidden due to dirt. If there is use a wrench to hold the nut closest to the filter and wrench off the 2nd nut. If there is only one try using a loosener like PB Blaster or Rost Off. Let it soak for a few minutes then try again. One thing...always use the proper tool for the job. It's not surprising that the nut is stripping if you are using a monkey wrench. Use the proper wrench.

On the oil filter...there may just be caps covering the bolt studs. I'm not too familiar with the Hondas. See if they actually come off.

Hope any of this helps.

Try a "flare wrench" for extra tight nuts, like on your fuel filter. Your auto shop will know what the are. Buy a set of them of various sizes. Their relatively cheap. Fuel filters often get stuck.

Oil filter, use pliers to loosen bolt. It may be slow, but it will eventually get it.
