At a restaurant, the correct % for tipping depends on you, the guest. There is no law that says you must tip, or for that matter how much. Generally 15% of the gross amount should be left on the table when you leave.
This extra money (tip) shows the servant how well they kissed your
a s s while you were there. It's all about the tip.

A buffet, only if you are a group of 3 or more. Depending if you ate like you were at a trough. Then a little something is in order to save you from total embarrassment.

Hairstylist, yes they are professionals. They must have certification to work (unlike table servants) Tip according to the style, or work being done. If your getting your haircut at First Choice, then tip accordingly. If you are at a more upscale salon with talented stylists, then be prepared to give 15% to 25% for a tip. Also if you are visiting them around a holiday an extra bonus is in order.

Ok not many of those people who answered ever had experience in any of those fields...so you have to disregard alot of those. Also, I know a lot of people who have degrees and are still serving (for that Ross guy that sucks so hard at life) so does that mean that you should tip them more, too? The answer is no. If they did a good job and brought you what you needed (extra credit if they brought you what you needed without you even asking) in a timely manner, tip them 20%. More if they made ya laugh. Take into consideration how busy they were though and be understanding. Don't go out to eat if you're in a time crunch cause you might get the server who has a ton of tables.

Same goes for buffet servers. Although in my experience they can't even keep up on drinks...but maybe they just don't want to cause people only tip them a dollar. If they can get you new plates and drink refills on time, tip them 20%. Buffets are already cheap...what's like 4 dollars to tip them good?

And same for hair stylists. Take into consideration the time it took them to do your hair and if you like it or not. Remember that the only thing they're going off of to give you what you want is what you tell them. Did you even do a good job of describing it? 20% for them too. Just don't be cheap. Stay at home if you can't afford it.

15 to 20% is standard for a restaurant...you should never go less then 15 unless you get really bad service...20% is a good tip for good service, but you can always tip extra if you have children who make a mess or if the server was especially helpful.
At a buffet you should tip 1 per person, more if you have messy children or f the server was very helpful.
Hair dressers are 15 to 20 percent also.

I was a server for 8 years.

I usually go 15%+ at restaurants

at buffets I usually just give $2 or $3 - they really don't serve you there, you get everything yourself basically.

Hair Stylist - I don't know the rules, but I also give them about 15%+

At a buffet I hand my bus person a 15% gratuity. Those guys/gals hustle. At my hairdressers, I give her a 15 to 30 % gratuity. Same for the nail parlour. If you do a service for me, you get a tip. End of story.

15% was the standard, but now 20% is the standard tip. I dont know about that first guy, that is an inaccurate and ignorant statement. As far as a hair salon I tip the same if the job is well done.

I seem to end up tipping about 25%, just to NOT reinforce the stereotype of the first person who answered. I try to leave a little extra since I know people like HIM are around.

10 percent for resturants, typically no tipping for buffetts, and it all depends at salons, for instance 10 percent is the norm, but if its your regular stylist then more then ten is good and if you were really happy with your new look then tip more, trust me they will remember! And its always a good thing to make friends with your stylist.
