I have two guinea pig books and it says hay works the best-if you can't afford hay, then I would ask the vet what a good substitute is. There's the pine shavings and cedar shavings, as well, but I don't know if they are good for guinea pigs to use.

I would recommend Carefresh bedding for your GP. It's a very absorbant bedding, with low smell, and no potentially toxic oils in them like Cedar & Pine bedding both have.
Carefresh is softer, and doesn't remain wet and clumpy when soiled, and it doesn't let off as much of a stench as wood shavings do.
It's priced a bit more, but not -too- much more. Usually comparing bags of similiar size, it's about $.50-$1.50 more per bag.
It comes in standard gray, and for slightly more, you can get it in solid white, or a large variety of colors.

To all those that said pine or cedar....PINE AND CEDAR BEDDING IS TOXIC!!! The phenols in pine and cedar both cause respiratory distress and ENLARGED LIVERS. It has been proven toxic to humans even.
Always use either paperbased beddings, or hardwood beddings such as Aspen.
Timothy hay should always be offered for dietary needs.

When I had guinea pigs I also used pine shavings. As well as giving them lots of chew treats so they would not try and eat the wood shavings
