The San Andreas fault is in California. When the San Francisco earthquake struck in 1906, which nearly destroyed the city, it was the San Andreas fault that created it.

The fault is important to America's future because if a big enough quake hit the fault, most of California and the west coast could literally drop into the ocean. Two main US cities, San Francisco and Los Angeles, are right on the fault, so a massive earthquake there would cost millions of lives and cause billions of dollars in property damage.

I worked with geologists the US Dept of the Interior for a few years, and they were looking at property prices on the east side of the fault, wondering were the new ocean front property was going to start. They all said basically the same thing; it's not IF, it's WHEN. If the fault pops the big one, it would be the largest catastrophy this country has witnessed.

It is in California. One side of it is moving North and roads have to be changed to compensate for the misalignment of the road on the East of it and the road on the West of it.

Some people think that California will break apart, at the fault, and go floating out into the Pacific Ocean to eventually become a tropical Island. Who knows.......might, but I doubt it.

If I remember correctly, it is two of the earth's plates colliding with each other that causes the problems.

Why is it important to the future of the US? I have NO idea. I would recommend you chek it out on the Inet. I'm sure you will get plenty of info on it. Pops

I live a mile away from it and it's scary when it shakes. Do your own homework.
