Trust usually involves some acceptance of vulnerability, and everyone isn't comfortable with that. No matter how long you know some one or how highly you think of them, you can't know what anyone else is thinking. It is that uncertainty that can keep people from developing trust. If someone has been betrayed on deceived in the past, it serves as evidence for them that trust isn't wise.

Someone significant in their lives may have broken the trust of this person one too many times. It has led this person to believe that no one can be trusted except themselves.

We are so conditioned that our life is a struggle or a kind of survival and anybody could be an enemy. This conditioning developed the never ending fear in our relationship with one another. Our mind is fragmented and the feeling of free space is alien in our consciousness.

I'm one of them...one of the reasons my relationships don't last long! and I don't have a best friend because of that. I don't even trust a doctor with my life, thank God I've never had any surgeries!

God is my bestfriend!

I'd imagine that some people only feel they can trust themselves because others have let them down or failed in the past.

Because for people who actually do trust themselves...they only trust themselves b/c they wouldn't lie to themselves or disrespect themselves. They wouldn't cheat or cheat on themselves or hurt their own feelings.
Because trusting yourself not to trust anyone keeps you from exposing yourself to rejection & pain.
At the end of the day, YOU are all YOU have. And YOU know YOU better than anyone ever will.
No shame in that!!!

Something probably happened to them in their childhood to cause a person to be this way which then was reinforced into their adulthood.
