if you tell your work that you have to leave an hour early because you have to attend a funeral, can they make you stay? My friend was at work today and had that happen and they said she could not leave. Can they do this? Doesnt she have a right to leave? She is only 17 years old, so she doesnt know. I mean the physically followed her around the store so she wouldnt leave, and they tried to scare her into staying. Is this right?

Depends on a lot of things. Who was the funeral for? Most places have a stated company policy about time off for the death of a parent, child or spouse. Also, did your friend ask for the time off in advance, or just announce that she was leaving early that day? You need to ask for time off, not just demand it, and most companies are farily reasonable about giving leave if they are given a reasonable amount of notice to make necessary arrangements for coverage. Again, company policy should state the proper procedure for arranging time off.

She should have known ahead of time that she had to go to the funeral and should have cleared it with her employer or found a sub. Most companies only give time off for the funeral of an immediate family member. I don't think it's right but it's true.

oh dear sorry for her loss.

I would [due to age] have had an adult do a follow up on this.......
for example, she told her boss, they said nope, so then either her mum or dad should have called, the ONLY thing that as an employer would have REALLY ticked me off is that it REALLY does seem short notice and trust me funerals are NOT arranged with less than a days notice...................which is why maybe they did not really believe her.

No, they can not tell her that she can't leave. They can fire her over it saying that she walked off the job but they cannot physically force her to stay.
