First of all you need 20/20 vision or better to be considered for any pilot position. Second, you could apply to the Air Force Academy and receive your training from them. Third, you will need an advanced education to become a pilot. It is a very complex and stressful career. I recommend you interview a pilot and ask them some of these questions. Good luck.

Becoming a captain for a major airline is a long and and difficult task. The answer to your question is yes and no.Yes if you wish to join the Air Force and become a pilot and fly heavy aircraft. No if you want to pay for your flying lessons, get a commercial/instrument/air transport rating and attempt to get an entry level position with a feeder airline at relatively low wages. Later, when you work your way to pilot in command and log about 2,000-2,500 hours you may wish to try one of the major airlines and start the process all over again for better wages.

The problem you may find (as it is here in the UK) there are maybe 500 applications for each post. The Airlines will pick the best of the best. That means college and maybe Air Force as well to be sure.

I don't think you have to go to "college"; just pilot school (Just to learn how to fly)
