I would like to be in both cities. In Venice they have some very interesting architecture they developed to deal with the canals that are full of water. I cannot imagine living that near the water all the time. I would like to be in Rome because of the art and the center of the Catholic Church and to meet the pope.

Good question, I've been to Venice and it is amazing and I would live there in a heartbeat, but since I haven't been to Rome I can't really choose between the two but I know that venice is definatly worth living in.
It's different than other cities I've been to, I really like the street painting and st. marcs square but most of all I loved how you can get lost in the little side streets and canals and then find a beautiful little place no one else knows of.

Rome. I get a little clausterphobic in Venice with all of the narrow corridors and few open areas that is not covered with water. Rome is more international and has a lot of history, too. (Just keep your eye out for those scooters! Some of them are crazy drivers!)

ive been to both. i would choose venice, its more exciting from my personal view. im here for the excitement than the pleasure. rome is huge and expanded, venice is small and compact. i love small towns, small areas, i live in florence for that. plus venice is full of little surprises little stores here and there little passages, rome is just a huge industrial city full of history and art and nothing else. venice is unique, how many other towns in all of europe is similar to venice? how many towns in all of europe is similar to rome? (i mean not couting the monuments) im sure there must be at least one.
thats why i choose venice.

Could I live in Rome for a year, then move to Venice? I really can't decide -- would like to be in both for various reasons, cultural exploration being one.

I'd have to go for Venice, because of the sheer uniqueness of the city. And Rome, while beautiful, is too catholic, and back in the day, they used to burn people like me, so I'd tend to steer clear.

I'd rather live in Rome due to the culture and the lack of flooding.
